World of Warcraft Movie: 4 Reasons Why It Shouldn’t Be Made

Kevin Kelly at spout.com lists out his four reasons as to why the wow movie should never see the light of day.   Head over to the site for the full article but I will go ahead and list the highlights here:

  1. First and foremost, it’s only been eight years since Dungeons & Dragons came out, and gamers are still feeling the sting.
  2. At last check, Blizzard had more than 10 million subscribers for WoW. That means if every one of those people bought a $10 ticket, they’d make $100 million dollars on the movie, which is what they’ve said the budget is.
  3. Third, it’s not The Lord of the Rings, which many people compare the Warcraft storyline to.
  4. Finally, it’s been over two years since the announcement was made, yet they don’t have anything to show for it except one piece of concept art.

I’m going to have to agree with Kevin at this point.   I’m a fan of this mmorpg just like any other gamer is but there are too many things going against bringing this movie to life.   It would be a video game based movie and while there were a few out there that had moderate success, (DOOM comes to mind, I actually loved that movie), it just seems too far fetched to try and attract an audience of pure gamers.  Ok, so yeah there are 11 million wow subscribers but approximately 15% of them are goldfarmers (no shit) and even if the remaining account holders bought tickets, it would not, as the article indicates, be enough to break even.

Now, you may think, well ok the DOOM movie is 100% video game based, so what the hell.   Well, actually, there were quite a few books that spawned off the DOOM world and add to it the fact that it’s been around a LONG time and it pretty much started the FPS genre and you have a scenario that allows for moderate success.

Also, it’s one of those times that I’m thinking hey, does this actually jump out at you and say “holy hell, yes let’s make this into a movie, that would be badass!”.   No, probably not.   And let’s face it, it’s going to be difficult to get passed the awesome trilogy that is Lord of the Rings.   Anyway folks, post some comments if you agree/disagree.   I personally might see this movie if it materializes, but I wouldn’t put it on the top of my “must do” list.

  1. First of all, I probably need to read the article. But I would like to disagree with one thing said… This DOES jump out at me and scream bad-ass movie. I personally would get a babysitter and go see it if it ever materializes. However, they need to get a storyline all their own and NOT resemble the LotR series. However, how can the game be separated from what influences it? I’m torn on that one, really. My point is that there are not enough movies out there that aren’t CRAP chick flicks, or gory-stupid-ass “SAW” style movies, or children’s movies. I’d go see it just because it is different (if I wasn’t a WoWer myself). I think it would be a good movie, they just need to get the right people playing the parts and make sure the special effects live up to the cinematics of the game itself. They need beautiful women, strong and badass men, and damn good costumes for what cannot be manipulated with makeup and prosthetics. /sigh. If only a movie like this would ever come out… Sorry for my rambling. I don’t get out much… I play WoW, remember? :)

  2. Ditto. I would love a WoW movie. Mostly because I don’t pay much attention to the story-line except in the cut scenes, and this last cut scene I was on the phone with Amazon support.

I bet it would be awesome if a Ridley Scott directed it, NOT a Uwe Boll.
